Psychology of Shopping

Psychology is used in many ways. Here's something that I came across and thought I'd share. It's a short quiz on the psychology of shopping provided by the entertainment site,

Which of the following fields determines if a retail store "works" or "doesn't work"?

_ Retail anthropology
_ Retail Psychology
_ Marketing
_ Market Research

What color has market research found makes customers feel like spending money?

_ Red
_ Dark green
_ Light purple
_ Neutrals

Upon entering a store, most shoppers head in what direction?
_ Left
_ Right
_ Straight ahead
_ It depends on the store.

Get your answers by taking the rest of the test here

My grade?
A gigantic F.
I only got 3 answers correct....but I learned so much!

I'm not a big shopper, but i got an A+ with 90% ...however, I used to work in Market Research, I knew most of the answers, and those that I didn't know, I was able to figure out by the way the question was asked, because ... I used to work in Market Research *grin*

So, I guess I cheated. Had I been stopped to be asked these questions, I'd have been excluded from the sample, because of my history.

i also got a 3/10 F, and I think i'm actually proud of that. im also going to be using a simpsons picture today too, strange coincidence!

Moof said...

*LOL* I got a 4!

And I'm afraid that I still don't know much more than I did before I took the quiz ... ;o)

mysti said...

Wow I got 7 out of 10 Giving me a B. Maybe I should look seriously at making this my career????LOL Nawww, I would rather Paint, or if I have to work, be a Pastry Chef again.

"Retail Anthropology" - who knew? But it makes sense once you think about it.

I got a "D" - 5 out of 10.

I'm afraid I'll be spending the rest of the day at Queendom - what a great site! Oh well, at least I won't be out shopping...

Todd and in Charge said...

Great post, I got a "D" with 5 right. There's a great book on this, by Stuart Ewen, called "All Consuming Images," available at Amazon.

Ian Lidster said...

Alas, Deb, I join you in your F. That's a hell of an admission for a guy who does business writing as a sideline. On the other hand, I'm not a real big shopper. As a male I am essentially an impulse buyer with a destination in mind. I know what I want, when I see it, I buy it. And I do know that marketing for males and females have to take entirely different psychologies into account.

I'm with dreaming again...I got an A+, 10/10. I too would have been excluded from the college major was retail marketing/management. I found out I hated it though! :P

Beth said...

I got 4/10 - F.

Strange for someone who loves to shop so much. But now I know their sneaky scams, maybe I'll spend a little less!

staffpsy said...

I received a stallar 4/10. Retail anthropology??

Dear Dreaming,
Wow, you are a smarty!

Dear Worst Weather,
Ok, I'll visit now.

Dear Moof,
You and me both, lol ;)

Dear Mysti,
You are a wonderful artist and I bet a great pastry chef. Both involve creativity. You are a smarty too.

Dear Candace,
Wasn't it a fun site?!?

Dear Todd,
What a great title for a book. I'll check it out on the amazon site.

Dear IAn,
Amazing how psychology gets woven into many things. I just read how the merging of psychology and casinos operate. I wish I could find WHERE I read it though, many books and journals here, and I can't find the original source.

Dear Fallen,
Another smarty!!! It is always good to know what you don't like!

Dear Beth,
I lol at the Brush Butt. Once I read what it was, I agreed. I hate when that happens. Of course, I got that question wrong, and I like to shop too.

Dear Staffpsych,
The terms that the fields come up with are thoroughly entertaining sometimes :)

Dear Dawn,
Nah, you don't have to pay attention, just enjoy the shopping experience.

I got a C (60%), although I was always one to argue my teachers for a retake.

healthpsych said...

What a fun way to start the morning! I got a D..I'm surprised at that, I loathe shopping. I got all the direction things wrong - would it make a different if you're a lefthander like me I wonder? I love the concept of the 'Butt brush' though. That made me :)

Miranda said...

I got an F too :( I got 1/10. Lol funny test though.

CrackerLilo said...

9/10, but I double-majored in marketing and sociology. And I use neither of them! :-)

jumpinginpuddles said...

i got an F and im proud of that because shopping is a pain the butt marketing theories or whatever else might work, because for me its about get in get out and bugger all the stop and look;)

Raine said...

I got a B and I have no idea why. I never studied anything and I dont much care for shopping LOL

Meow said...

Oooops, I got a big fat F ... only one answer right !!! I'm not a big shopper, though. I go with a list and a purpose, get done what I've gotta do, then get outa there !!
Thanks, that was a fun test.
Take care, Meow

Em said...

Only got 3/10! Maybe that means I need to shop more often. But only so I can brush up on my shopping knowledge! HA! Butt brush? Interesting.

phred said...

I guess I`m not a very good shopper . I scored a 30%. 3 correct.
I may never go shopping again.
That was fun though.
I wonder Who does these ''studies ''?

The Mass Defective said...

I'm great at shopping, but suck at shopping psychology...I only got 2 right.

Precisiongirl said...

Shopping psychology is scary. My old Psychology teacher said that in one chain of supermarkets pumps a chemical round the building that imitates the smell of freshly cooked bread - because apparently that makes everyone drool.

Also, staples that one might "pop in" for are located at the polar opposite of the entrances so you have to go all the way round (and end up buying stuff on your way) just to get the milk/bread you ran in for.

Then we were told how reward cards are a big operant conditioning scam.

Dr. Deborah Serani said...

Dear Godwhacker,
A "C" is a great grade compared to a gigantic "F". I was only successful once in my education to get a retest. You must do a post on your influential skills! :)

Dear Healthpsych,
It made me lol too. Once I read what it was it was something I could SO relate to....I hate when the clothes brush against me.

Dear Miranda,
Who knew there was so much science behind shopping!

Dear Crackerlilo,
Another smarty in our midst. Great job. I never took a marketing class but wish I had.

Dear JIP,
I tend to be like you too. I know what I am buying before I go in, and usually do a hunt and gather, buy and go kind of thing.

Dear Raine,
You got a "B" because you are a total smarty :)

Dear Meow,
Like you, I do the same. May be why we got "F"s ;)

Dear Em,
I got that question wrong because what answer would every be called a butt brush. Now we all know the term stands for a real thing. Funny, how things get named.

Dear Phred,
This is an educational site, and the structure of the tests are probably based on facts about subjects, gathered by the website administrator. So, is it a solid research test? Nah, probably not, but it is fun!

Dear Mass,
Your comment made me smile.

Dear Prescision Girl,
Wow, that info is so interesting, and a bit unnerving. Along a similar line, I read somewhere that in casinos, fresh air with a higher level of oxygen is pumped in because it makes people feel good....and if you feel good you spend more.

Heidi said...

I bow my head in shame.. 0/10 a big fat F.. I'm a shopping addict there has to be a

Godwhacker said...

I learned "influence" from the best. One of my closest friends in middle school taught me all I know. The method is nothing really special ~ you just keep talking until you get your way. Eventually they give in... just to get you to shut up! :)

_Jonathan_ said...

I got an A+... no, of course not. I got a big F. Snif.
It's a good test.

Jackie said...

Whoooo hoooooo I got a big 4 out of 10! THe butt brush...who knew!

THanks for the laugh!

Id it is said...

My score was a 2!
Not surprising considering I hardly ever go to the malls especially since online shopping becam all so easy.

Dr. Deborah Serani said...

Dear Heidi,
Maybe you do shopping online more than in the stores themselves? That could account for it. I got a gigantic "F" too.

Dear Godwhacker,
VERY good advice. Keep talking 'til they make you stop!

Dear Jonathan,
You had me believing for a moment. ;)

Dear JAckie,
The Butt Brush makes me lol. Seems many of us found it funny too.

Dear Id It Is,
I do most of my shopping online as well. I went to the mall a few months ago and it felt so strange to me. AND I it was such a slower process.

SkyeBlue2U said...

3/10 F well hey I'm a truck driver I only deliver the goods, LOL! That was a fun quiz. :)

Cathy said...

I only got ONE right !!!! much for that! :)

Dreaming again said...

With the exception of Raine, those of us that did well, have marketing background.

Good shoppers have nothing to do with it, being smart doesn't for the most part, because anyone reading Dr. Deb's blog is smart (ok, that was a real suck up comment lol)

Somehow, that points out to me about how manipulative the shopping industry is ... which is just ... I don't know... creepy.

Dr. Deborah Serani said...

Dear SKye,
Your comment made me smile.

Dear Cathy,
I know...I failed big time too :)

Dear Dreaming,
I know....sometimes psychology is used in ways that are so great.

Kathleen Fasanella said...

Yippee! This is a great quiz for my blog, thanks for the tip. I didn't expect it but I got 9/10 (I got #2 wrong, picked red). Two caveats: I'm a huge Paco Underhill fan (sell his books on my site) and I loathe, detest, HATE shopping!!!!

Speaking of Paco Underhill, I cannot stress the importance of reading his books if you're in retail. Particularly if you hope to weather the changes that the aging populace of baby boomers will wrought in the marketplace.

astrorat said...

i got it right 50%! thats a D! :D *yay*

Dr. Deborah Serani said...

Dear Kathleen,
You go girl!!!

Dear Astro,
Wow, you did SO much better than many of us here.

Austin of Sundrip Journals said...

Well, I got a 3 as well. I thought I'd get more. Perhaps if they used layman's words I might have done better. How was I supposed to know what an anthology factor is? My goodness! so, had they used REAL words we might have all scored better. LOL.
The one I knew I'd get right is where they put the men's suits or the best items. It's in the back of the store. You know how many times I've complained about having to walk to the very back of a store to get one dag on thing? I know why but it's still frustrating to hike for one item.
Anyway.....that was a fun test.
