The Power of Your Name

Did you know that you are likely to buy items that reflect your name?

And that your preferences are sometimes shaped by your name as well?

Name Letter Preference research has been around for over twenty years and is mostly used in the advertising and marketing worlds. The psychological research suggests that due to egocentric and identity driven needs, we often make decisions that reflect our own name. Essentially, the positive associations we have about ourselves spills over into how we evaluate life choices.

So John may likely marry a Jane.

Sally may choose to drive a Subaru.

Carly prefers to drink Coke.

Zachary may be a Zoologist.

Research has shown that Mildreds are over-represented in the town of Milwaukee in the United States, and the name Dennis is over-represented among Dentists.

I guess my preferences don't fall into the fold of this research. I drive a Jeep, and I buy whatever brands are on sale in the store, no name stands out more than others. I am married to a man that doesn't share any associations to my name, and I am a psychologist. There aren't a lot of "D's" in my life. . . oh, wait a minute.

I stand corrected.

I have two "Dell" computers.

And prefer "Dunkin Donut" coffee.

"D'oh!"

So piano tuners named Keyes, Meteorologists named Weathers, Teachers named Read, an insurance claims adjuster named Crook... the may have chosen those careers because of their names, right? (and I personally knew those people, I am not making this up)

My personal favorite was the gynecologist in Temecula California by the name of Kuntz.

Interesting.

OMG, that is truly amazing data!

It cracks me up to see some of the stuff that researchers find to look at! And they got so many studies out of this...amazing :)

My sister and her husband have fun trying to clarify their conversations as to who they are talking about when they are talking about Don and Peggi ...there are THREE couples it could be. (although, the other 2 are Peggy's) She finally got to say My sister to refer to me, instead of by name. Then only had to clarify the other 2.

Maybe it's the name.

Either Peggi's like Don's or Don's like Peggi's?

That's funny, my father isn't a mule/donkey rancher....

You have no idea how funny that is.

IntelligentLayPerson said...

Oh another funny thing. One of my neibhors has my father's name. And on each side of him are couples with the same names. His wife always has to ask him "Which so and so?"

and you are a DOCTOR :)

Lets see, I don't have any B things in my life.....

But I would trade in my Nissan for a Benz if I could

I cannot think of any connections in my life that directly can be ascribed to the 'I' in Ian. Other than the fact I live on an island. Oh, and my three wives' names are (from first to current) Carol, Trudy and Wendy. But, they were all of Irish extraction. Hmm, maybe that's something.
As for professional connections to names. There was a man who was the coroner in a town on Northern Vancouver Island whose name was Mr. Deadman. And our local fire chief for years was Lawrence Burns.

Hrmm.... My name is Deb as well, and I don't have ONE thing in my life that shares the letter "D" or even my last name. I wonder if I beat the odds or just hate myself! ha! Psychoanalyze that puppy!

How are ya Deb??

Marie said...

Interesting! I went so far as to find out what my name actually means. I forgot it though!

Heidi said...

Oh I just thought of one for myself..

I do " hide" in certain areas of mylife.. Heidi=Hide...

I dunno..That's the only thing i can think of...lol

I thought this was a very cute post. But I too seemed to have failed the test.

Here's an odd one - and I've noticed it before - I don't have "L" things, but, the most of my closest, bestest loves have four letters in their first names, just like me. And when I consider the ocd counting stuff, well... Isn't that odd?

Scott said...

Very interesting. I wonder how many S's I have in my life.

Love Star Trek, am single (shoot!), currently a student. I can't think of too many name brands that I buy because of the S, though . . .

Jade said...

Hmmm but my name is Jenn but I don't like Gin.... I do like Jack though! Still starts with a J right?? ;-)

Ms.L said...

Teehee!
Now you've got me thinking!
I'm going to have to pay better attention now..

I know this isn't exactly the same but:My name is Lael,pretty unusual,non?
My husband?? Durell. Also unusual.
I always thought it was weird that we found each other. What are the odds of a couple BOTH having weird names?? But now I'm thinking we've found each other because of our names!

Marj aka Thriver said...

LOL! I see you're continuing the laughter theme! Thanks for the giggles! :)

SeaSpray said...

Hmmm...my name is Patricia or whatever variant of that one chooses to call me. I love pizza and am known to be quite perky at times. when it came to picking boys names I almost always went for the Js but my husband is Jim.

This is true - I do know of a gynecologist who's name is Seymore Weiner but I think he should have been a urologist.

ellesu said...

Fascinating!

Maybe that's why I've always loved Krispy Kreme? That's the only letter connection I can think of in my life.

Now my husband....all three of our sons share his exact initials. Ummmm....

DrGwenn said...

I have to say, I don't fit the name profile either! Nothing at all in my life has a "G" associated with it, except a few pieces of gold jewelry from my hubby.

Mel Avila Alarilla said...

Fascinating post dr. deb. I don't know about this since we never had the chance to choose our own names. They were given to us by our parents after our birth. There are countries where parents name their new born babies with names that have definitive meanings. There are a variety of reasons why parents choose a particular mane for their babies, so I don't see the connection of our names with our choices in life. Maybe what the researchers found out were purely coincidental and were mere projections of their minds. Intriguing post. Thanks a zillion. God bless and have a wonderful weekend.

I love my name. My REAL name, not my married name. Since day 1, Ihave never managed to introduce myself by my married name.. and have more than once had to ask for new forms because I got the name "wrong"
( remember the movie GHOST? But I never get to keep the pen)

Anyway..

I still use my maiden ( real) name for everything that isn't "official"..

So anyway.. Kathleen....
K

I love the letter K and think it is beautiful..... but not surprisingly I do not have a career associated with K..or a favorite food... or car.. lol

I love ami's post!

oh and one more thing...

I used to have a great aunt named Ivy.Her husbands name, and I kid you not..was Oak.

They actually lived in a little house right down the hill from where I now live, and I used to go to their house after school.

They had two daughters , neither named after plants, but they did have a dog named Bounce.

Okay that has nothing to do with anything but it was a good name.. if they help up their arms in a hoop he would jump through..lol

This is really funny.

I was born in Minnesota and have brothers named Mike and Mathew. I am Mary. My mom and dad were both born in MN also. They were named Mathew and Marlene. So weird.

I will have to look at other parts of my life and see if they connect.

Dear Donna,
Sometimes I wonder why money is spent to research such things!

Dear Dreaming,
Three couples with the same name. Wow!

Dear Intelligent,
I'll lol anyway :)

Dear Barbara,
I forgot about the D for doctor. I wish you a Benz too.

Dear Ian,
Mr. Deadman and Mr. Burns are so funny.

Dear ~Deb,
I'm not swayed by my name, at least I don't think so. I'm good. Howz about you?

Dear MArie,
LOL.

Dear Heidi,
Those two words are kinda interesting.

Dear Lone,
A Delorean would be a cool car to drive! I wish one for you too!

Dear JIP,
I imagine with DID it would be a lot to follow.

Dear EVI,
I thought it was an intersting idea to blog about.

Dear Lynn,
That is unique!

Dear SCott,
I am not a loyal shopper and will buy whatever is on sale or whatever coupon I may have. So, I don't fit the trend either. But it is interesting to see how some names are more prominent in careers than others.

Dear Jade,
You are so funny....

Dear Ms. L,
I love your hame and your hubby's. How wonderfully beautiful and different. They have a similar ring to them, don'tcha think?

Dear MArj,
I do love to laugh, so I went with some light stuff!

Dear Seaspray!
LOL. He should've been a urologist. There is a doctor in town whose last name is Doctor. So she is called Dr. Doctor. How funny.

Dear Ellesu,
I had to think hard about what D's are in my life. I could only find my compueter and my DD coffee attraction. It is funny how certain trends follow us in life.

Dear Dr. Gwenn,
What about your Golf love? ;)

Dear Mel,
Interesting about the culture of naming for you. The researchers can't really explain "why" some of the coincidences happen, so luck may very well be involved. And irony too.

Dear LZ,
LOL!

Dear Raine,
A little bit of psychological fluff for the blog.

Dear Kath,
I use my maiden name too. I have more of an attachement to it than my married name. And yes, Ami's post made me rolflol!

Dear MAry,
You totally fit the research profile!!!! We have a winner!!!Thanks so much for sharing that.

:)

He he... cute post :)

I saw a book the other day with the strap line "doesn't everyone have a guilty secret?" and I actually had the sense of recognition looking at those two words that you do when you see your own name. That was WEIRD!

You're really making me think here. I can't identify with any sort of product that relates to my name, first initial etc... Nope.

Now, I did have relationships with two people that had the same name but I think that was just a bizarre coincidence!

What I find kind of interesting is when or why people name all of their children with the same first letter? I've never really understood that...

SeaSpray said...

Doctor ! Doctor! Wasn't that in a song?

Dear Dr. Doctor...very funny!

therapydoc said...

This is very weird. But I'll tell you. It's VERY important to remember people's names. So if this'll help, then it's good.

Casdok said...

Really interesting, i will look out for that in my life!

Fallen Angels said...

I couldn't come up with any products that I use that go along with my name..."J" is my first initial. However, my favorite activities at school when I was young (that I can remember) were jacks, jump rope and jungle gym!

There was an orthodontist in my town (may now be retired) named Dr. Payne...I always found that funny.

Godwhacker said...

I was given a business card today by an "S" Hill.

Her email was shill@_____.com

I wonder if she knew how that looks?

Dear Guilty,
That is funny.

Dear PA,
I have trouble recalling names as I age, and if I had to recall many with the first letter, I don't think I could be successful!

Dear Seaspray,
The song by Robert Palmer: Bad Case of Loving You.

Dear Therapydoc,
As I age, I am not as keen with my memory as when younger. It is importnat to remember names and anyway that one can enhance that is good by me.

Dear Casdok,
I've been looking more closely too. Still I can't find any advertising buying tendencies.

Dear FAllen,
Dr. Payne, lol!

Dear GW,
SHILL. Hilarious. Truth can be stranger and funnier than fiction!

Well, my husbands name is Tim but my first husbands name wasn't anywhere close to my name! I can't think of anything else that starts with 't' either but I'm sure I'll be thinking now!

puhpaul said...

I don't know, I've gone through many of my preferences and can't see a connection.

Perhaps Paul prefers Pepsi you ask?
Nope I love Coke and Coffee.

Does Paul purchase peach pie?
Nope I'm an cake and cookie guy.

Hmm, maybe my name should have been Carl or Colby.

I always been interested in name association for some reason. So this was very interesting me. So for Rose, letter r-let's see, I love to read, love the color red, love to ride instead of drive, love diamond rings, well that's enough okay!

My first name and my last name (before I was married) both start with the letter 'f.'

Freedom's a nice word, for nothin' left to lose...

Gosh, such an awful word starts with that letter.

Actually the meaning of the word is distorted, I thing.

Nice site you have here.

Why do I love 'J's' and 'G's' when my middle name starts with 'M?'

I'll read more here...

Because I think it will be 'Fun.'

Now I know why I love fact and fiction, so much.

Pretty funny.

I feel so much,
and I am fortunate,
and I loved studies envolving,
psychology and fraud, and 'what's his name'...was it Fred, LOL

that famous, fallacy...
and I miss my friends.

And, now I'm curious about the 'sound' of 'ph.'
